Detailed Description:

It's time to put it to the test. This is for those who have taken or are bypassing Backpacking Essentials and are confident in their gear and backpacking knowledge. We will do a review of your gear, iron out the kinks, and do a shakedown hike as a final test to be ready for your next backpacking trek. After reviewing everyone’s gear, making final adjustments, and going over a few last topics, we’ll put on our full packs and head out for a shakedown hike. This is when you’ll get an honest preview of backpacking with your gear and a chance to deal with any issues in a more controlled environment compared to on a backpacking trip where issues are more difficult to address. We’ll be teaching and answering questions along this 3-4 hour hike where we find that students get in tune with themselves physically and mentally before putting their skills to use in the backcountry. Afterward, we’ll debrief on how the day went and make sure each student is confident in themselves and comfortable with the terrain and environment for their upcoming trip. This approach leads not only to increased student confidence but to a positive group dynamic as well. Minimum Gear: 50-70 liter backpack, shelter (tent, tarp shelter, bivy, or hammock), sleeping bag, sleeping pad, lighter, water bottles or bladder for 2-3 liters of water, water filter, small knife, 75’ paracord, compass, cell phone with USB charger & cable, headlamp & extra batteries, canister stove & fuel, pot, food & snacks, eating utensils, bear hang food bag, first aid kit, toiletries, clothing for the weather, & hiking boots. A very detailed packing list will be sent to registrants the week of the trip, but feel free to contact us with any questions before then. Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
