Detailed Description:

The most advanced instructional trip in the series adds hiking into the backcountry at night and an overall more ambitious itinerary over the weekend. Students will do all trip planning under the watchful eye of the instructors and they can expect to leave as capable solo or group trip leaders. This is the longest and farthest trek in our backpacking instruction series and will take place in the most difficult terrain. Students will be given starting and ending locations but it will be their trip to plan from campsites to water sources to bailout plans. We’ll start off in the early evening to hike in and set up camp at night, simulating a typical after-work start to a backpacking trek after driving a few hours to get to the trailhead. The next morning students will have the opportunity to plan out the rest of the weekend's objectives. After taking into account the capabilities of everyone on the trip, they’ll determine the average group pace, the potential destinations, water sources, bailout times and alternate camps, wake-up times, and test out their abilities to be overall trip leaders. After a successful day, we’ll debrief to share our thoughts on the day and use our experiences to plan out our last full day. At the bittersweet conclusion, students will walk away self-reliant and capable of using their skills and experiences to not only be confident independent backpackers but to mentor others looking to experience the outdoors. Minimum Gear: 50-70 liter backpack, shelter (tent, tarp shelter, bivy, or hammock), sleeping bag, sleeping pad, lighter, water bottles or bladder for 2-3 liters of water, water filter, small knife, 75’ paracord, compass, cell phone with USB charger & cable, headlamp & extra batteries, canister stove & fuel, pot, food & snacks, eating utensils, bear hang food bag, first aid kit, toiletries, clothing for the weather, & hiking boots. A very detailed packing list will be sent to registrants the week of the trip, but feel free to contact us with any questions before then. Prerequisite: If this is your first TrailBound Project backpacking trip, you must also register for and attend a Backpacking Shakedown Hike. (Contact us if you are unable to make it or if you're already an experienced backpacker.) Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
