TBP recommends cutting to slim down a full-sized closed cell foam mat to 14" wide and cutting it in half so that half can be carried while hiking during 3 seasons and both halves carried during winter. Use half under your core to insulate you from the ground in emergencies. Double the thickness with the second half in colder conditions.
